Production

How did we use Technology in our Production?

As a group, our entire rough cut opening sequence was all done with the iMac’s software ‘iMovie’ we found this very restricted and very a basic software which didn't allow us to add certain transitions or effects we would've liked, In addition- the titles seemed very basic and lacked inspiration, the software didn't have anything unique enough to appeal to our genre of choice.



Therefore, for our final copy we completely switched over to using industry standard software Adobe Premiere pro & after Effects, they offered unique titles which appealed specifically to our genre.



Nonetheless, we further used Photoshop for creating DVD covers, as well as Garage Band to create a unique contrapuntal soundtrack, to create mystery and uncertainty within our opening sequence.

Distribution

Who will distribute our Product?



Due to the recent controversy surrounding the BFI, we had to look for more unique, bright ways we could find to distribute our product. We looked no further than Curzon Cinema which allows customers to stream movies on the day of their theatrical release. We feel that everything is run through the Internet in the modern age and this a unique way of distributing our product in a way that still appeals to Internet-friendly users, without them maybe illegally downloading the film, as Curzon is available for films in HD at a low price of £4.
We swayed towards Curzon because of its brilliant features for example merging with leading UK film distribution group Artificial Eye, offering over three hundred films, therefore our film is in good company, as well as planning to offer film premieres online.



There are also brilliant events scheduled by companies such as FilmLondon; who showcase film festivals as well as screenings with Q&A's, who can exhibit our film.

Furthermore as you can see there has been a vast difference from our preliminary task and our final AS product despite the difference in time being only 6 months. As a result I believe that I have learnt a lot of new techniques in a short amount of time that has made out production look professional and respectable. In addition you can see that in our preliminary task we did not use mise en scene effectively, editing or the wide range of camera shots. however in our AS product we have and this has made our production look appealing to the audience.

Furthermore there is also another media institution that might also distribute out media product. This would be ‘Curzon’. Curzon is a new service that allows their customer to stream cinema films for wherever they are in the UK and Ireland. This is launched on December 10. This also shows the way that UK cinema is moving as now you are able to watch the film from you home from just £3.50. As a result that emphasises the easiness of distribution compared to the traditional physical form of distribution.



Curzon has provided this online service by linking up with Artificial Eye and as a result in total there is an option of up to 300 films. As a result this shows the versatility that Curzon has provided to the film industry, Philip Knatchbull, CEO of Curzon, said “ this is a new service that has never been provided before by a UK cinema operator and that this is bringing independent films to the widest possible audience.” As a result this is the reason why Curzon may also be interested in distributing our film because the aim of this programme is to revolutionise independent film and make these films more accessible and widely recognised. As our film fits into this bracket I believe that this will be the perfect instruction to distribute our product towards success because in recent years there has been a decline in cinema sales due to illegal downloads, however due to this being so cheap this will entice many of these people to watch films legally.


In addition another institution that might want to distribute our film could be Film-makers Festival Fund (FFF). This is because FFF supports London based directors that have made films by arranging the films to be showed at festivals. Also they give grants to help the directors in the future and this can also help us to improve and continue to make films. As a result this will be very good and beneficial for our film. Aswell as the Film-makes Festival Fund, London Screen Archives (LSA) could also help us distribute our film; this is because similarly to FFF they also support regional film makers. As a result these two can also help distribute our films and therefore help a film become a success. Also this institution is similar to Vertigo films, they also help London based filmmakers, however the difference ids that Vertigo films have regular competitors in whom they allow the winners film to be showcased at a festival. As a result this will be very beneficial to our film.

Soundtrack Audio for 10/10/10 - Josh Morl


Here is the main part of the soundtrack, which i created to go alongside the video for our product. I produced this using the Apple software 'Garageband'. I used specific instruments at certain times to match the feel of the video and add meaning to the visual content of the product. For example, as the antagonist character is cutting out segments and letters from the newspapers the soundtrack is fast paced to match the on-screen rapid cut video.

Question 7: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?



Here are some images from our preliminary task that show how we had inconsistent lighting:



As we had problems with lighting in the preliminary task we tried hard not to let this affect our finished film so we tried to film at the same times of day and when filming inside trying to keep a conisstent light.
Also, advancing from our preliminary task we have used more effective and interesting edits and transitions. We have also created our own original music which we didn't do for the preliminary task.

Question 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?




We used iDVD to create a menu to play at the start of our DVD. This allowed us to make a play button which would link to the opening sequence of a film.

We used iMovie to create our film allowing us to use interesting titles, add music created on the Mac and to use edits and transitions to create a smooth finished product.

We used Garage Band to create originakl music to accompany our opening sequence.

Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?



This is my survey into thriller conventions for an opening sequence. I asked people what they would expect from an opening sequence from the thriller genre including what shot types and angles, characters, colours and gratifications. This allowed us to see what kind of things people expect from the opening sequence of a thriller and therefore what we should incorporate into our opening sequence.

Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for our product would be mainly young people, especially males due to the thriller genre. The certificate for our film would be a 15 due to the thriller nature, this would therefore set the age limit for the target audience of our film.


However, by having a powerful female lead in our film we have also made our film more appealing to the female audience. A female lead is unusual of the thriller genre and we have therefore made the film more accessible to women as well as men. With the working class characters of a delivery boy and a plainclothes policeman we are also appealing to these demographics as well. Mostly our film will appeal to the demographics of B and below. The character of the delivery boy is a character that will most appeal to our target audience as it is representative fo them and adds an excitment appeal.

Question 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

This representation of a teenage delivery boy will appeal to our target audience and will have an excitement appeal as it represents how ordinary people (like our audience) can get caught up in crime and mystery.

This representation of a strong female lead is unusual of a thriller film. This would make our film also appeal to women aswell as it is not typical of the thriller genre and is a way in which we challenged thriller conventions.

We also have the representation of a plainclothes policeman in our film.

Question 3: What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why?

Whereas in the past the UK Film Council would distribute lottery funding in order for British films to be made and distributed in the UK, since the UK Film Council is being abolished this responsibility will be taken over by the British Film Institute from 2012. This distribution of lottery funding allows small scale British films, like ours would be to be distributed across the nation.
Aiding the distribution of small films is the Digital Screen Network that was set up by the UK Film Council. They set up 240 digital screens in 210 cinemas and this is an ever growing number. These allow for easy, digitalised distribution which is a lot cheaper than 45mm prints therefore making it easier for low budget films to have distribution oppurtunities.
Regional screen agencies are also helpful in distributing local films. Screen East is well known for the success of This Is England. Screen East has now collapsed due to the abolishment of the UK Film Council but a new screen agency for the East of England Link Film has been set up as its replacement and it encourages film and television production in the East.
Another new platform for distributing film is the new Curzon On Demand service which allows you to stream films as soon as they are released in the UK in their own homes from just £3.50 a film. They have merged with film distribution group Artificial Eye to offer a number of films. This service is set to revolutionise art house film, by making small films more accessible and recognised. Films with limited distribution in theatres may be availabble on this service meaning small films have more of a chance. A service such as Curzon On Demand may be the perfect way to distribute a small film like our own in a new way for the ever changing world of cinema.

These images from Lord of War's opening sequence show the conventions we have used and developed. From Lord of War we took influence from the use of point of view shots to show the journey of a bullet which we developed in our film by showing the journey of the letter being delivered from point of view shots. This is the audience response from the first screening of our new opening sequence. After the showing, we took feedback from the audience about improvements that could be made, to improve the quality of our product, making it more professional and of a better appeal to our target audience. We have now made the changes and after the second screening and no requested imrpovements the opening sequence is now complete and we have our final cut.
